{"id":385,"date":"2011-09-30T11:51:03","date_gmt":"2011-09-30T15:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.bmbs.org\/?p=385"},"modified":"2011-10-02T11:58:45","modified_gmt":"2011-10-02T15:58:45","slug":"getting-ahead-by-falling-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.bmbs.org\/?p=385","title":{"rendered":"Getting ahead by falling behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The good news:\u00a0 The American Human Development Project, a social research organizationm, has published an analysis of recent Census Bureau data that shows that the gap between men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s wages is closing.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news:\u00a0 It&#8217;s because men&#8217;s salaries are falling.<\/p>\n<p>Median earnings for men, adjusted for inflation, fell by $2,433 \u2014 or 6 percent \u2014 from 2007 to 2010. Women\u2019s earnings fell by just $253 in the same period, a drop of 0.9 percent.\u00a0 As the <em>New York Times<\/em> reported, some of the recession\u2019s steepest declines were in industries that tend to be dominated by men. Earnings in construction, for example, fell by 5 percent, the analysis found.
