Careless use of a good thing

Careless doctors writing prescriptions and careless patients using antibiotics have created a massive new vulnerability in our health care.  In a report entitled “Antimicrobial resistance: global report on surveillance 2014,” the World Health Organization issues a warning that’s about as dire as could be:

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens the effective prevention and treatment of an ever-increasing range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi. … A post-antibiotic era – in which common infections and minor injuries can kill – far from being an apocalyptic fantasy, is instead a very real possibility for the 21st Century.

Another situation in which sacrifice will be expected from “the other guy.”
